COVID-19; A Chance To Unite

In amongst the social-media avalanche of COVID-19 posts, many, including myself, find themselves groping aimlessly in the interwoven waves of panic, hope, questions, disillusionment and endurance that have emerged in this state of global crisis.

The Printhouse, being an advocate of creativity and community, applauds the widespread embrace of the online community spirit that has emerged as we are collectively being forced to return to the core values of society that are so easily lost in a busy, suffering world: Social care and presence.

Socialcare and socialpresence are rediscovered when the world slows down, and the One is still and silent enough to truly see the Other…

One of the most powerful community platforms for the spread of care and the recognition of presence is social media. Looking back through its history, there is a loud overarching story of isolation, abuse, distraction, and self-centred or misguided attention. Until now, community has not shown its true power, purpose or endurance on this platform – but today we are telling a new story and speaking a new word I encourage you to engage with the world around you, using a platform that we have used our whole lives, in an entirely different way: truly see the Other.

Offer the precious present of your online presence, and see the world respond with its own beautiful offering. We can, and will, find the beauty in this time of suffering.

During this time, The Printhouse has been forced to effectively close for the next couple of months with the intention of reopening for events from June on-wards depending on the progression of our national situation (this will be reviewed by our team at the end of each month). Therefore, we will not be accepting any new bookings until June. We wish you all safety and well-being – physically, emotionally and spiritually – during this time.

Please take a moment to reflect on the poem below, written by local poet Sarah Appleton who offers a community blessing and reflection at this time:

May your life remain free from shadow,

May your soul stay free to soar.

May your heart yet see a glimmer

Of hope in midst of storm.

May you learn to rest in chaos
May peace yet mark your days.
May Spring embrace your doorstep,
And in your household stay.

May fear stay far behind you,
May love now make its mark.
May you find laughter still before you,
To light to current dark.

May the stars overhead ever guide you,
May you always weather the storm.
May the waves never overpower you,
But lead you safely home.

Have A Creative Christmas!

If written a decade ago, this blog post might have given you a bullet-pointed list of all the new accessories you simply must-have in order to brighten your home, keep the turkey warm, and stitch a two-toothed smile on the face of every 5-year-old bundle of anticipation and endless energy.

But faded now are the bullet-points that played peekaboo across the internet, as nostalgic sentimentality prompts the mind to remember the days of simplistic family-centred Christmas; stripped naked of balls and bells, returning once again to laughter by the fire. Family, friends, flicking through Christmas films, and playing funny games.

Have we understood the point?

Or have we found another bullet-point list to label with value?

The most valuable item or element of Christmas is not an oven timer, silk Santa-nighties, fairy-lighted homes, or the new iPhone. Yet neither is it (dare I say) family, friends, or a lover come to stay.

The most valuable treasure to tick off your checklist this year, is…

Creativity, blossoming in beloved company.

It is not about who, or what, or when – it is about what you create with them.

Memories of creativity with company are the gifts of time that cannot be stapled with ‘value’ or ‘sold’.

What kind of Christmas will you create this year?

The Printhouse is available for hire this December between the 1st-20th. If you would like an opportunity to explore your creativity with family and friends this year, why don’t you organise an event and use this space? We welcome your creativity this Christmas.

We have been busy over the past few months getting our social media game on.

You can now follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter where we have been hard at work creating an acrostic (meaning a poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a word or words) overview of what we are all about here at The Printhouse.

You can check it out and follow us at:

If you have comments or suggestions as well, we’d love to hear from you.

Something Old and Something New

Here at The Printhouse, we are looking forward to the Spring and excited to welcome old friends and make new ones over the coming months. Whilst we look forward to what’s coming up, we’re also looking back at what this space has been used for in the past.

The place where the Printhouse stands today has served all manner of purposes. Originally it was a printers under the name of Parker & Honey, producing stationary for various law firms based in Sheffield city centre. That’s why we’re called The Printhouse, remembering what has been and still serving the city centre…just in a slightly different way than before!

Some printing tools we have lying around the office…

Since then, it has also been home to various restaurants and bars until it was turned into The Printhouse in 2014. It’s quite remarkable to think of all the different things that have taken place over the years on just this one site let alone across the whole of Sheffield city centre.

Today, we hope to welcome you to our space to create more memories, whether that’s for your baby shower, your wedding reception, your business event, or anything else you might have in mind! Get in touch with events manager Joe on 0751 7511 793 or joe@stphilipssheffield.org to book your event today (and check out our new Instagram feed at theprinthousesheffield to follow more of what we’re up to…)
